Mama Counter is a small, honest everyday tool for parents: it listens in the background and counts how often the kids call out “Mama” and “Papa” – live, so you don't have to keep count yourself. It turns that frequency into a playful stress level. Here's what happens, step by step.
The Mama Counter mode
You tap the big record button and the app starts listening. Every recognized “Mama” and “Papa” bumps its counter. Colored rings around the button show your current calls-per-minute: from relaxed green through yellow and orange into the red danger zone – and beyond, for those days when it really does go through the roof.
By default the app counts Mama and Papa. You can optionally add a third, freely chosen word – a child's name, say, or a favorite whine-word. Below the counter, the recognized text scrolls by as a live transcript so you can see what was counted.
The Audio Bingo mode
Using the bar at the bottom you switch to Audio Bingo – buzzword bingo you play by ear. You enter 16 words into a 4×4 grid (or fill them from a theme at random) and start recording. As soon as one of the words is spoken, its cell is marked. A full row, column or diagonal – and the app shouts “Bingo!”. More on the Audio Bingo page.
Speech recognition – entirely on your iPhone
At its heart is Apple's on-device speech recognition. Turning speech into text happens fully locally on the device. No audio and no transcript ever leaves your iPhone – there is no account, no sign-in, and no server listening in. On first launch iOS downloads the language model once; after that, recognition works offline too.
So that nicknames count as well, the app recognizes forms like “Mommy”, “Mum”, “Mami”, “Dad” or “Papi” in addition to “Mama” and “Papa”, and it tolerates small recognition differences.
The worldwide live counter
At the end of a session the app contributes a single anonymous number to the worldwide live counter: the sum of the Mama and Papa calls it counted. No identifiers, no text and no audio are transmitted – just an aggregate number. You can see the current world total any time on the home page.
Requirements
Mama Counter requires iOS 26 or later and an iPhone 12 or newer (on-device recognition needs a capable Neural Engine). The interface is available in German and English; speech recognition supports many more languages.
