Mama Counter

Privacy Policy

1. Controller

The controller responsible for data processing in connection with the iOS app "Mama Counter" ("the app") is:

Fredrik Gundelsweiler
Sonnenweg 5
8280 Kreuzlingen, Switzerland
Email: support@mamacounter.com

2. Summary

The app counts how often a word of your choice (e.g. "Mama") is called out around you and visualizes the frequency as a stress level. All speech recognition happens entirely on your iPhone. Neither audio recordings nor transcripts ever leave your device. The app requires no account and collects no personal data itself. At the end of a session the app transmits only an anonymous total of the calls counted to a worldwide live counter (see section 5) — no audio, no transcript, and no identifier that could be traced back to you. Advertising is served by Google AdMob (see section 6) and only personalized with your consent.

3. Speech recognition and microphone access

The counting feature requires microphone access. Audio is processed in real time by Apple's on-device speech recognition framework (SpeechAnalyzer), which has no server-side path. Audio is never stored or transmitted; transcripts are processed transiently for display and counting and discarded when the session ends.

The language model required for recognition is managed by the operating system (Apple) and downloaded from Apple's servers when needed. Your device communicates directly with Apple for this; Apple's privacy policy applies.

4. Data stored locally

Session statistics (date, duration, count, average and peak rates, selected count word) and your settings are stored exclusively on your device. You can delete them in the app at any time; deleting the app removes all data irrevocably. These detailed session statistics never leave your device — only the anonymous total described in section 5 is transmitted.

5. Worldwide live counter (Google Firebase)

The website shows a worldwide live counter that sums up every "Mama" and "Papa" call ever counted. To power it, the app transmits — only at the end of a session — the number of calls counted during that session (e.g. "+12 Mama, +3 Papa") plus the fact that a session took place. These numbers are transmitted anonymously and without any personal or device identifier and are immediately added to a global total; no inference about individual users or devices is possible. No audio, transcripts, location, or session details are transmitted.

This total is stored using Cloud Firestore, a service provided by Google (Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland). For technical reasons Google processes your device's IP address at the moment of transmission; we do not carry out any further profiling. To prevent abuse, the transmission is protected by Apple's device attestation (DeviceCheck/App Check). The legal basis is our legitimate interest in displaying anonymous usage figures (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). See the Firebase privacy information for details.

6. Advertising (Google AdMob)

The app is funded through ads served by Google AdMob, a service of Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland ("Google").

When serving ads, Google processes data such as your IP address, device information and — only with your explicit consent via Apple's App Tracking Transparency dialog — your device's advertising identifier (IDFA). Without consent, only non-personalized or contextual ads are shown. The app additionally uses Apple's privacy-preserving SKAdNetwork framework for ad attribution, which does not allow identification of individual users.

On first launch you will be asked for consent via a dialog (Google User Messaging Platform). You can withdraw or adjust your consent at any time with effect for the future — in the app's settings or in iOS Settings (Privacy & Security → Tracking).

The legal basis for personalized advertising is your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR); for non-personalized advertising it is our legitimate interest in funding the app (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). See Google's privacy policy and "How Google uses data" for details.

7. Your rights

Under the GDPR you have the right of access (Art. 15), rectification (Art. 16), erasure (Art. 17), restriction of processing (Art. 18), data portability (Art. 20) and objection (Art. 21). You may withdraw consent at any time, and you have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority.

Note: since the app does not transmit personal data to us, we generally hold no data about you. For data processed in the course of ad serving, please also contact Google (see section 6).

8. Children

The app is aimed at parents and is not intended for independent use by children.

9. Changes

We will update this policy when the app or the legal situation changes. The current version is always available at this address.
